The one and only

This was the main item on the Vancouver Canucks homepage on February 5, 2014, and the the in front of Ryan Kesler shouldn't have been there. Click the image to enlarge it.

PTP: Proofread this please

There's an extra word - or missing words - near the start of this paragraph in "That's no yoke" in 24 hours Vancouver on January 14, 2014. It'd be great if has-been was supposed to be hyphenated and the missing words were the, to go between of and has-been, and was, to go between has-been and released. Amirite? Amateur hour

Here's a bungled spelling of (what should have been) Vancouver in the photo caption of "The road to an MBA" in 24 hours Vancouver on November 4, 2013. Click the image to enlarge it.

Causing problems

If you're going to make an error, might as well put it right in the headline to get it over with - that should have been than. From "Solve problems by asking more that why" in 24 hours Vancouver on October 21, 2013. Then,

on a different page in the same paper there was this. This is the entire thing. What the fun? Who is "him/he"? Is he Pratt's father? Pratt's life partner? Pratt's son? Pratt's dog? Click an image to enlarge it.

The S.S. Misspelling

Britney's last name gets shortened in the headline but is back in its usual form immediately afterward. From "Spear will sing - with backing track" in 24 hours Vancouver on September 27, 2013. Click the image to enlarge it.

A proofradr would've spottd th splling rror

Look at Seth's last name in the headline, and then look at Seth's last name below the headline. The writer dropped an E, maybe after dropping E. Also, there should have been a comma after Ashe. From "Weekend update: Myers got married" in 24 hours Vancouver on September 3, 2013

Milan Lucic plays for the Chiacago Blackhawks

It's one thing to misspell Chicago, but it's a whole 'nother thing to claim that the series-winning goal was scored by a member of the losing team. Attention writer: the Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup by beating the Bruins in the final, and Milan Lucic plays for the Bruins. (The winning goal was actually scored by Dave Bolland. Click here for the game's box score.) From "News for Youse: Housing for the DTES, Torterella Canucks new coach, and Bieber accused of drug addiction" on The Georgia Straight online on June 25, 2013.

24 hours Vancouverrors - April & May 2013

It's been a while since errors from the pages of 24 hours Vancouver have been featured here, and it's not because those pages have seen perfect writing; it's because I've been accumulating a whole bunch and now it's time to share them. First up, from "Predicting big things from emotional leader Kesler in the playoffs" on April 23, is the above mess. I think it can be solved by removing the is, but don't hold me to that. A couple of hyphens, in full-speed and power-move, would also help. Then,

in "Millennials + managers = meltdowns!" on May 6, gets contains an apostrophe and it absolutely should not contain an apostrophe. Then,

in the photo caption for "Pill bottles debut at advance polls" on May 9, prescription was misspelled. That was on page 4,

and on page 6, in the photo caption for "Riot couple avoids jail time" on May 9, sentenced was misspelled. Then,

in "Hader latest castmemeber to announce SNL departure" on May 15, there was a blatant misspelling in the headline. How was that missed?! Not only is castmemeber not a word, neither is castmember. It should be cast member. Then,
in "Modern thrives on relatability" on May 22, Cam is not Jay's son on Modern Family. Mitchell is Jay's son, and Cam is Mitchell's partner. Good effort there, writer. Then,

later in the same article, it was actually Cam who returned to teaching. Good effort again there, writer. Then,

on the same page as those Modern Family errors is this fun alternative spelling of "Gangnam Style" by Psy, which should also be in quotation marks instead of italicized. Click an image to enlarge it.

Recent 24 hours Vancouverrors

Here are some errors that have been detected in the pages of 24 hours Vancouver since the start of February. On February 6, the obvious error is it's, which should be its. The less obvious error: can winter really be on its way in February? On February 6 we're almost exactly halfway through winter and spring is on its way. Then,

on February 21 (in "5 on 5") who's should have been whose. Then,

on March 1 (on the front page!) denounces was missing its second N. Then,

on March 13 there was some sort of connection between New Year's Eve and January 31 but I couldn't figure it out. Little help? Finally,

this headline on March 14 featured a misspelling of appearance. Click an image to enlarge it.

Shoeshoeing? So... regular walking?

I'm quite familiar with snowshoeing, but before reading the above photo caption (from "North Shore Rescue crew out on Hollyburn Mountain to retrieve fallen snowshoer" on The Province online on January 5, 2013) I'd never heard of shoeshoeing. Now,

after an update, the photo caption includes a misspelling of Hollyburn Mountain and repeated words. The repeated words are near the end and are repeated from much earlier in the caption. Click an image to enlarge it.

Get the editor onn the phone!

Paul McCartney was in town on Sunday, and by all reports it was a fantastic show. Not so fantastic is the of/off error in this photo caption for an article ("Paul McCartney's setlist promises the Beatles' best in Vancouver" on The Georgia Straight online on November 25, 2012) that was posted just after noon on the day of the show. Then,

in another article ("Paul McCartney fans are not going berserk like they did before the 1964 concert in Vancouver" on The Georgia Straight online on November 25, 2012) posted right before the show, the error was repeated. What makes it worse is that it wasn't a copy-and-paste job, because the stage was changed to our stage. Click an image to enlarge it.

The extra E is for erotic

The best place for a nonword: a headline. Remember, it's remembrance. From "Veterans say bar is 'sexualizing' Rememberance Day" in 24 hours Vancouver on October 9, 2012.

24 hours Vancouverrors - September 2012

I detected a few errors in the pages of daily newspaper 24 hours Vancouver during September 2012. First, on September 5, there was a missing hyphen in what should have been son's abduction. Would you believe that was the article's headline? Whether you would or wouldn't, it was. Then,

on September 13 there was a misspelled name in "Surrey breaks ground on new pools". The Surrey mayor is Dianne Watts. Then,

on September 18 there was another headline gaffe. Player express does not agree. It's gotta be either players express or player expresses. In this case, the article's content showed that players express would have been the correct one. Then,

also on September 18, an leopard-print should have been a leopard-print. From "‘Inappropriate’ new line brings trouble for Hurley". Last but not least,

on September 21 there was a misspelling of The Big Lebowski in the photo caption of "Film fanatics go retro". Click an image to enlarge it.

Davieee, Davie Shumka!

"Stop Podcasting Yourself" is a very funny podcast and absolutely worthy of winning Best Podcast. It's unfortunate, however, that the writer of this article ("The Sunday Service, three other Vancouver comedy groups win at 2012 Canadian Comedy Awards" on The Vancouver Sun online on August 26, 2012) didn't find Dave Shumka's name worthy of spelling correctly. 24 hours Vancouverrors - July 2012

This post is a collection of the errors I detected in the 24 hours Vancouver newspaper and on the 24 hours Vancouver website during July 2012. Starting things off, on July 6 (in "Katy Perry: Part of Me") captures should have been capture. Then,

also on July 6, due should have been do (in "'Caps moving on up"). Then,

on July 7 (in "Are we being dumb with smartphones" online), Blackberry should be BlackBerry. Respect the camel case. Then,

later in the same article, it's still incorrectly capitalized, and now it's also incorrectly pluralized. It should be BlackBerrys. Then,

on July 16 the headline (of "17 injured by lightning at Ontario Ribfest") has the correct spelling of lightning. But in the article, both attempts at lightning are seen as lighting. Also, the final paragraph has a space inserted in what should be they, which is amusingly obvious when listening to the audio of it. Finally,

on July 27 there was a sneak peak occurrence (in "Perry sets sights on comeback"). I'm still waiting for sneek peek. I don't understand why sneak peak has quotation marks around it. Thanks for reading. Click an image to enlarge it.

Writing that will A-a-Maze you

Here's an article ("Campaign seeks to keep A-Amaze-ing Laughter in Vancouver" on The Vancouver Sun online on March 8, 2012) about some sculptures. According to the headline the art is called A-Amaze-ing Laughter. However,

the article's second paragraph claims the art is A-Maze-ing Laughter. In addition, there is an extra hyphen in what should be 20-year lease. Then,

in the article's penultimate paragraph, the art is called A-maz-Ing Laughter, and in the final paragraph, it's Amazing Laughter. Four different names for the same art, all in the same article! Where else will you get such variety?! The final paragraph also includes an undercapitalized Morton Park and a case of missing closing quotation marks. Click an image to enlarge it.

24 hours Vancouverrors - June 2012

I don't read 24 hours Vancouver nearly as much as I used to. On breaks at work, there are usually several copies of that day's edition and I may or may not browse through one of them. When I do choose to browse, there are often errors to be found, so it seems nothing much has changed from years back when that rag was my main source of postings here. Here are some errors I noticed during June 2012. On June 25 there was a ridiculous factual error in a photo caption (from the article "Cyclists pedal against mentall illness stigma"). Does a campaign named Hide Don't Ride make sense when it's raising awareness for mental wellness? No? Well,

that's because the campaign's name - written correctly in the article itself- is actually Ride Don't Hide. Then,

on June 27 another dumb photo caption (from "Bike-share challenges grow"). Shertaon should have been Sheraton, and the second occurrence of of the should not be there. Then,

also on June 27, this, ummm... question(?) makes my head hurt. From "Buying fame 15 minutes at a time". Click an image to enlarge it.

This post has words and images. There are words and images included in this blog post.

An interesting spin on the usual hyphens-in-ages error. Normally, 30 years old shouldn't have any hyphens, but in this case the error is that there should not be an S at the end of year. From "Man shot near Port Moody Rec Centre: report" on The Vancouver Sun online on May 30, 2012. Then,

the article was updated and the error fixed (and the man's age changed). But along came other issues. In the second sentence, I think the best fix is to insert the word and between night and has. Also, as you can see above, in the article's first three paragraphs we are told more than once how old the victim was, that there were shots fired, and that he died in hospital. Click an image to enlarge it.

Proofread! You CAN do it!

The initials NHI and ELT (for not handed in and elite athlete, respectively) both made sense to me. But CAN for chose not to attempt didn't make sense. So I clicked the link included in the sentence and discovered, as I had suspected, that CAN should be CNA. From "Edmonton teacher suspended for giving zero grades to students who deserve zeros" on The Georgia Straight online on June 1, 2012. Click the image to enlarge it.
