Milan Lucic plays for the Chiacago Blackhawks

It's one thing to misspell Chicago, but it's a whole 'nother thing to claim that the series-winning goal was scored by a member of the losing team. Attention writer: the Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup by beating the Bruins in the final, and Milan Lucic plays for the Bruins. (The winning goal was actually scored by Dave Bolland. Click here for the game's box score.) From "News for Youse: Housing for the DTES, Torterella Canucks new coach, and Bieber accused of drug addiction" on The Georgia Straight online on June 25, 2013.

Get the editor onn the phone!

Paul McCartney was in town on Sunday, and by all reports it was a fantastic show. Not so fantastic is the of/off error in this photo caption for an article ("Paul McCartney's setlist promises the Beatles' best in Vancouver" on The Georgia Straight online on November 25, 2012) that was posted just after noon on the day of the show. Then,

in another article ("Paul McCartney fans are not going berserk like they did before the 1964 concert in Vancouver" on The Georgia Straight online on November 25, 2012) posted right before the show, the error was repeated. What makes it worse is that it wasn't a copy-and-paste job, because the stage was changed to our stage. Click an image to enlarge it.

Fuc function

The function of a spell checker is to catch mistakes such as typing fuction when you meant to write function. From the Georgia Straight homepage on October 11, 2012.

Luwrongo

It's an article ("Is keeping Schneider and trading Luongo the best approach for the Canucks?" on The Georgia Straight online on June 30, 2012) about whether or not the Canucks should trade their number-one goaltender, Roberto Luongo. In the second paragraph, seen above, Luongo has his last name misspelled on its first appearance, followed closely by the correct spelling. However,

from that paragraph through to the article's end, Luongo's last name is written six times,

and it is misspelled all six times! Seriously! Seven of the eight times his last name is in the entire article - an article in which he is a main subject - his last name is misspelled!

Including twice each in the article's final two paragraphs. It should be noted that The Georgia Straight is a Vancouver, B.C., publication and that Vancouver is home to the Vancouver Canucks, the team Roberto Loungo Luongo currently plays for. Click an image to enlarge it.

Proofread! You CAN do it!

The initials NHI and ELT (for not handed in and elite athlete, respectively) both made sense to me. But CAN for chose not to attempt didn't make sense. So I clicked the link included in the sentence and discovered, as I had suspected, that CAN should be CNA. This is about a man who got a quote wrong

There are two errors here. There is just one woman yelling, so women should be woman. The second error, though, is one that puzzles me. The writer quotes the women woman directly (or tries to) but she never said what she's quoted as saying. It's close, but surely a quote should be exact. A video of the woman yelling is embedded in the article for all to see and hear: "This is about a fucking man who got shot in Tottenham." From "London riots provoke passionate response from Hackney woman" on The Georgia Straight online on August 8, 2011. Click the image to enlarge it.

What about the gazeboants?

Who are tentants? People who pay rent to live in tents? I like camping, but only for a few days at a time. From "Olympic Village tenants decry excessive energy bills" on The Georgia Straight online on July 7, 2011. Click the image to enlarge it.

An occasional error

I suppose a loving reader can overlook the occasional error, even if it's in an article's headline. (Or was this Dan's way of sneaking an ass into the headline?! You can't spank without one, after all.) From "A loving husband indulges in the occassional spanking (Savage Love)" on The Georgia Straight online on June 15, 2011. Click the image to enlarge it.

At his best, he's a fiesty forward

Was the writer of this article ("Vancouver Canucks sign free agent Raffi Torres" on The Georgia Straight online on August 25, 2010) at his best when he wrote the nonword fiesty instead of feisty? No time for proofreading? Not even time for a simple spell check, which would have caught this?

Expires May 31/2010

It appears to be a deal that anyone can take advantage of, but can you tell what the catch is in this VelaShape Vancouver advertisement in The Georgia Straight on July 8, 2010?

THE INNOVATATORS OF COMFORT

It's a good thing that phrase is trademarked, lest someone else want to misspell innovators with an exra syllable. From an INspiration Interiors advertisement in The Georgia Straight on June 10, 2010.

it's high quality dating at it's finest

For high-quality writing at its finest, you'll have to look somewhere other than this It's Just Lunch advertisement (from The Georgia Straight on June 10, 2010).

January 31th

There's a bit of a problem in this Xcitement advertisement (seen in The Georgia Straight on December 24, 2009). Actually, the problem is seen twice. It should be January 31st, not January 31th. This isn't the first error of its kind.

Fighting For Ithica

-- "Santa, just let it rock!" in 24H Vancouver on December 18, 2009

The writer is a guest writer from a Vancouver radio station - The Fox Rocks! I am not in the music biz and I do not know Fighting For Ithaca's music, but I do know how to spell the band name correctly. If it's any consolation, 24H, weekly paper The Georgia Straight also has it wrong:

Canada's Largest Show of it's Kind!

-- Taboo The Naughty But Nice Show advertisement in The Georgia Straight on October 29, 2009

In January it was a missing apostrophe in Vancouvers Sexiest Event of the Year. Ten months later the missing apostrophe has turned up in Vancouver's, but it brought an unwelcome friend into its. D'oh.

Acubalance Wellbess Centre; Granvile Island Brewing; Blue Olive Photgraphy; Anderw Seymour

On September 24, 2009, weekly newspaper The Georgia Straight released its Best of Vancouver edition. The subsequent edition, released October 1, featured a photo of all (most?) of the category winners. However, some of the winning companies had their names misspelled. For starters, Wellbess should be Wellness.

Next, Granville Island Brewing gets mistreated half the time,

while Blue Olive Photography gets mistreated both times.

Acubalance Wellness Centre is still misspelled.

And last but not least, the company's name is correct, but not General Manager Andrew Seymour's name.

can't imagine anything more gruesome then sitting around yelling and arguing about hockey

-- "Hockey pools take tenacity" in The Georgia Straight on October 1, 2009

Some would say that writing takes tenacity, but that's only if one cares about writing properly. Most writers with even a tiny bit of self-respect would consider a then for than error to be gruesome.

In an a phone interview

-- "Torture case has local link" in The Georgia Straight on August 13, 2009

While an should be removed, I have to admit that "In an a phone" is a lot of fun to say over and over and over again. Makes me think of a banana phone.
