Stephanie Meyer

-- "Twilight Time" in Westender on September 17, 2009

The writer chose to ignore those bestseller lists and decided to hazard a guess in the spelling of the Twilight author's name. With 5 Es and zero As, it's Stephenie Meyer.

Sasha Baron Cohen (thrice!)

-- "Brüno (Movies)" in Westender on July 9, 2009

With three identical misspellings in such a small space, the writer of the review clearly believes the actor's name is Sasha and not Sacha. The common confusion is no doubt due in part to the fact that there is a famous Sasha Cohen - the American figure skater who's won an Olympic silver medal.

Cheese Mouse Cake; Valentines

-- Choices Markets advertisement in Westender on February 12, 2009

While I do appreciate how the words cheese and mouse are linked, I am doubly appreciative of not having mouse-related pastries. However, cheese mousse sounds pretty good. Whether or not you're going to put an apostrophe in Valentine's, at least be consistent.

1000s of job listings

-- BC Job Network advertisement in Westender on February 12, 2009

Space is not an issue in this ad, so why is it 1000s instead of thousands. As it stands, the text is read as, one thousands of job listings. Even if space is an issue, please don't use 1000s to represent thousands.

SNEAK A PEAK

-- "In the city" in Westender on January 22, 2009

The misspelling of peek is often found in close proximity to sneak. I wonder if the writer would correctly spell peek in sneak's absence.

NEIGHBOUHOOD DAY!

-- West End Community Centre advertisement on page 5 of Westender, Thursday September 4 2008

It's a beautiful day in this neighbouhood, a beautiful day for a neighbou, would you be mine? Could you be mine?

It's a neighbouly day in this beautywood, a neighbouly day for a beauty, would you be mine? Could you be mine?

I have always wanted to have a neighbou just like you, I've always wanted to live in a neighbouhood with you.

So let's make the most of this beautiful day, since we're together, we might as well say, would you be mine? Could you be mine? Won't you be my neighbou?

Won't you please, won't you please, please won't you be my neighbou?

Hi television neighbou, I'm glad we're together again....

John C. Reilley

-- Ferrell and Reilley strike a new low in ‘Step Brothers’ in Westender, Thursday July 24 2008

Correction: John C. Reilly

As you can see in the image above, Reilly's name is misspelled in the headline and the photo caption, yet spelled correctly in the review's main text. Regardless, I hope to see this movie very soon.

What's-it's-name

So what then of our mascots? What terrors do Quatchi, Sumi, Miga, and What's-it's-Name represent? Are they the Four Horsethingies of the Apocalypse? Early signs are worrisome. The Vancouver mascots may already have claimed their first victim.

Steven Colbert

(Click pic to enlarge)
Not even Steven Colbert’s brilliant role as a bombastic sportscaster, a slew of cameos (some clever), and some novel spoofs of pop-music favourites can resurrect this disaster. There is no love for this guru.

It begs the question

While the Harold & Kumar flicks are indebted to the zany Bob Hope/Bing Crosby road movies of yore, the time-honoured Odd Couple dynamic is also an essential part of their appeal. It begs the question of whether the onscreen characterizations of uptight Harold and carefree Kumar are at all representative of Cho and Penn in reality. “It’s actually the opposite,” confesses Cho. “On set, I keep relaxed by making jokes. [Penn]’s the guy in the corner preparing because he’s such a good actor. I’m a hack, really. I’m just goofing off. As a result, I needle him even more on set.”
-- 'Harold & Kumar' takes on an uptight world in Westender, Thursday April 24th 2008
