Davieee, Davie Shumka!

"Stop Podcasting Yourself" is a very funny podcast and absolutely worthy of winning Best Podcast. It's unfortunate, however, that the writer of this article ("The Sunday Service, three other Vancouver comedy groups win at 2012 Canadian Comedy Awards" on The Vancouver Sun online on August 26, 2012) didn't find Dave Shumka's name worthy of spelling correctly. Writing that will A-a-Maze you

Here's an article ("Campaign seeks to keep A-Amaze-ing Laughter in Vancouver" on The Vancouver Sun online on March 8, 2012) about some sculptures. According to the headline the art is called A-Amaze-ing Laughter. However,

the article's second paragraph claims the art is A-Maze-ing Laughter. In addition, there is an extra hyphen in what should be 20-year lease. Then,

in the article's penultimate paragraph, the art is called A-maz-Ing Laughter, and in the final paragraph, it's Amazing Laughter. Four different names for the same art, all in the same article! Where else will you get such variety?! The final paragraph also includes an undercapitalized Morton Park and a case of missing closing quotation marks. Click an image to enlarge it.

This post has words and images. There are words and images included in this blog post.

An interesting spin on the usual hyphens-in-ages error. Normally, 30 years old shouldn't have any hyphens, but in this case the error is that there should not be an S at the end of year. From "Man shot near Port Moody Rec Centre: report" on The Vancouver Sun online on May 30, 2012. Then,

the article was updated and the error fixed (and the man's age changed). But along came other issues. In the second sentence, I think the best fix is to insert the word and between night and has. Also, as you can see above, in the article's first three paragraphs we are told more than once how old the victim was, that there were shots fired, and that he died in hospital. Yahooooooooo!

More fun on Yahoo! webpages! From the Yahoo! Canada homepage on March 10, 2011, it should be either scientist explains (if there was only one scientist) or scientists explain (if there were two or more scientists). Also from the Yahoo! Canada homepage on March 10, 2011,

I assume Candian water is a brand of bottled water, similar to Evian, so I'm safe because the only water I drink comes from the tap in my Canadian home. No need, then, for me to click that link. Then, again from the homepage,

a geography lesson for the person that wrote this on March 11, 2011: Tofino is on the west coast of Vancouver Island and is quite far from the city of Vancouver. After the Japan earthquake and tsunami, an evacuation from Tofino is far more reasonable than an evacuation from Vancouver would have been. I click to the article ("Twilight stars Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner evacuate Vancouver Island set threatened by tsunami" on Yahoo! Canada News on March 11, 2011), and

read about Tinsel Corey's tweet. After some very quick research, I realized her name is actually Tinsel Korey. After going to Tinsel Korey's personal website,

I see on the landing/welcome page that the author of the Twilight book series got both her first and last names butchered. Her name is Stephenie Meyer and not Stephanie Meyers as the above text would have you believe. Next,

the Yahoo! Canada homepage on March 12, 2011, features a doubling of off. Jettisoning the second off would be a nice fix. Then,

I have no idea - none at all - what this text from March 14, 2011, is supposed to mean. Therefore, I sure as heck didn't click it. From March 15, 2011,

whose decision was it to leave the second I out of decision? Isn't there anybody at Yahoo! who has an eye for detail? Finally,

again from March 15, 2011, the young girl's IQ is higher than Einstein's. See the difference?

Mariana's Trench; Stephen Page

In today's wired world, with very easy access to information such as the spelling of a band's name, this writer (of "Adams headlines entertainment for PNE's centennial" on The Vancouver Sun online on June 23, 2010) has no excuse for inserting that apostrophe into Marianas Trench. Then,

in the next paragraph, he misspells Steven Page's first name. Boss to writer: "You're phired!"

May 31

Critical Mass Cyclists and other self-propelled riders cruise through city streets to promote non-polluting forms of transportation. Meet at Vancouver Art Gallery, May 31 (and last Friday of every month), 5-5:30 pm, free, velolove.bc.ca.
-- Playground listings in The Vancouver Sun, Thursday May 29 2008

Correction: May 30. I hope there weren't any riders showing up at VAG on Saturday the 31st because they would have been quite disappointed. At first I wondered if this was the Sun's subtle way of decreasing the number of participants in Critical Mass, but their bit in parenthesis is correct so probably not - unless they wanted less participants in that particular CM. Also, the ride doesn't get going until after 6. Therefore, unless you wanna hang out for a bit, showing up between 5:30pm and 6pm would be better than 5-5:30pm.

Liberties Associations // sutuations

B.C. Civil Liberties Associations slams transit Taser use

The B.C. Civil Liberties Association has complained to the provincial police watchdog over the use of Tasers by Metro Vancouver transit police.
"The fact that Tasers are being used in sutuations that border on debt collection by the government is outrageous," association president Rob Holmes said in a news release.
-- B.C. Civil Liberties Associations slams transit Taser use in The Vancouver Sun, Thursday April 17th 2008

The first error is in the headline - the article is about just one association: the B.C. Civil Liberties Association. I'd say it's safe to assume that sutuations should be situations.
