Dave Bolland scored unassisted less than three minutes into the first overtime; as scarce and Don Cherry praise; Vancouver was a wet blanet; D. Bollan

-- "Canucks let one slip away in Windy City" in Vancouver 24 hours on May 8, 2009

The 24 hours sports department must have had a lot of celebratory drinks during most of last night's Canucks game, followed by an equal number of consolation drinks after the loss. If not the whole department, then just this one writer. How else to explain the many errors found in one simple game-recap article.

First of all, Chicago's overtime game-winning goal was not scored by Dave Bolland. It was scored by Andrew Ladd, with Bolland and Martin Havlat assisting on the non-unassisted goal. For the second image, my best guess is that it should be as scarce as Don Cherry praise. What's a wet blanet? If it's not supposed to be wet I can offer the Hawks a Canuck blanket to help dry it off. Or a white towel might be better.

Finally, our attention goes to the scoring summary alongside the article. At least 24 hours is consistent with their factual error of Bolland's unassisted goal, only now Bolland has lost his final letter (just like his Hawks team will be losing their next two games). Also, why do all the point-getters except Martin Havlat have periods after their first initials?

The writer's name attached to this article wasn't one of the two names I'm used to seeing in the 24 hours sports section. I went online to the paper's website and on the contact us page I saw that the writer is the paper's Editor-in-chief. Wow. That fact helps explain the many errors found daily in a relatively small newspaper.
