Access Prohibitied

-- Pike Street between 3rd & 4th Avenue in Seattle, WA, USA, Tuesday July 22 2008

Correction: Access Prohibited

There we were, walking peacefully down Pike Street, when *BAM* this error knocks the wind out of me. I naïvely thought that it was a one-off error, until I spotted the same sign at the entrances to many different alleys during the remainder of our Seattle getaway and saw that they all have the extra i. I am in awe at the carelessness involved. Prohibitied isn't even a word!

SORRY FOR ANY ANY INCONVINIENCE

-- Rite Aid Pharmacy at Pike Street & 4th Avenue in Seattle, WA, USA, Wednesday July 23 2008

Correction: SORRY FOR ANY INCONVENIENCE

When I took this picture it was solely for the spelling error. It wasn't until I added the picture to this post that I saw ANY ANY. That's too many anys!

Kelsey Grammar's heath issues

-- "Heart problems plague Grammer" on page 16 in 24 Hours Vancouver, Tuesday July 29 2008

Corrections: Kelsey Grammer's health issues

The actor's last name is tricky, I'll give you that. But it's spelled correctly in a larger font directly below! And Grammer could be having heath issues, but based on the article's substance, that's neither here nor there. Back-to-back word typos - I love it!

-- "Smell of freshly cut grass overrated" in 24 Hours Vancouver, Tuesday July 29 2008

Correction: on its side

The best part about this one is that the apostrophe is correctly absent two sentences earlier, in the exact same wording (see bottom of left column for the correct usage, top right for incorrect).

-- Sympatico / MSN webpage, Sunday July 28 2008

Correction: Maple Leafs' meaningless gestures

I clicked to the article wondering if it really was about Canada's national symbol. Alas, the article is written about the professional hockey team based in Toronto. Tonight's matchup: Vancouver Canucks versus Toronto Maple Leaf. I think not.

This submission comes from my friend Jason, on behalf of his wife and Latin America. Thanks!

-- Save-On-Foods at Cambie Street & West 7th Avenue in Vancouver, BC, Canada, Saturday July 12 2008

Correction: Mexican chips

I don't know if all their signs are designed in such a manner, but I would have aligned potato chips with the rest of the text.

since it's completion; stair-like trail; idead of a good time

click pic to enlarge

Ever since it's completion in 1983, hikers from all around the world have taken on the challenge of the stair-like trail at Grouse Mountain, and although the venture up is gruelling, the view from the top is worth it.
Hiking the Grouse Grind every week for the past four years is Chris Yu's idead of a good time.
-- Grind a Vancouver icon in 24 Hours Vancouver, Wednesday July 16 2008

Corrections: since its completion; stairs-like trail; idea of a good time

idead of a good time? Is that foreshadowing? Urban Dictionary's sole definition of idead (with bonus error!) is:
An outstandingly stupid idea, which usually leads to somebody dieing.
"Well that was a terrible idead."
Well at least no one is dead as a result of the idead.

How well [is] the public is being served when

Yesterday I came close to posting this error found on page 3 of that day's 24 Hours Vancouver (read the sentence that begins "How well...):

Today 24 Hours Vancouver did a follow-up article, again on page 3. Using the same quote, they apparently attempted to fix the error:

The addition of [is] in the second article doesn't correct the error. If they had added the [is] and deleted the other is, then it would make sense. What's curious is that 24 Hours Vancouver is quoting a TransLink spokesperson's open letter to the media. So why did the writer needed to add [is] and the [to]?

hook-ups; hook up; Hookup

Friday's 24 Hours Vancouver had a cover "story" (big pictures and a few words) about summer hook-ups:

On page 2 the daily poll had to do with hook ups:

The cover story's intro announces the Summertime Hookup Guide:

C'mon, 24 Hours! Whether it's hook-up, hook up, or hookup, stick with one and go with it! But preferably not hiccup, I mean hookup.

is a 100 years old

-- Rouge party pooped in 24 Hours Vancouver, Wednesday July 9 2008

Correction: either is a hundred years old or is one hundred years old

I'm guessing that the first suggested correction is the correct one. Either way, I seriously doubt that organizer Rory Richards said that the pavilion "is a one hundred years old". I once learned that when writing numbers in a published work, one should write out the numbers - as in, one instead of 1. A professional writer should know that "a 100" instead of "a hundred" is just plain wrong.

Danylo's official homepage says that he's at Capilano Arts Theatre in North Vancouver this Friday and at Chilliwack Arts Centre in Chilliwack this Saturday. So, for the shows this Friday and Saturday, he's definitely not performing at Yuk Yuk's - he's not even performing in Vancouver.
