Yahooooo! November 2012

It's Yahoo! error fun time! Here are the errors I detected on the Yahoo! Canada homepage during November 2012. First, on November 1, loss should have been lost. Then,

also on November 1, Maclean's felt naked without its required apostrophe. Then,

on November 7, affect should have been effect. Then,

there was a misspelling of museum on November 8. With easy access to spell check and online dictionaries, how do nonwords appear on major websites? I don't get it. Lastly,

Jennifer Aniston's last name was jealous of her first name's double-N and decided to do something about it. Click an image to enlarge it.

24 hours Vancouverrors

Here are some recent errors made by the staff at 24 hours Vancouver. First up, 33-year-old required hyphens in "Heigl keen to adopt again" on January 17, 2012. Then,

affect should have been effect in this sentence from "The bare truth: Showing skin at work not a good idea" on January 23, 2012. Then,

on January 25, 2012, the name was Biddlecombe throughout the article ("Serial killer warning quashed"), but an E got added on final mention. Then,

why did this teaser on the newspaper's front page on January 26, 2012, tell readers that there is only one beach in New Zealand? That the should have been an a. Then,

nobody puts the BC Coroners Service in a corner. From the newspaper's homepage on January 27, 2012. Then,

the first the should have been spotted and removed from this sentence in "Gratuity gripes hit tipping point" on January 27, 2012. Finally,

LMFAO is properly all capped in the headline then all wrong in the first sentence of "Madonna with LMFAO?" on January 27, 2012.

Metronews Vancouverrors

This is the first sentence in "Life after the lay-off" in Metronews Vancouver on April 25, 2011. Effects should be affects. Then,

the same error is present in the article's photo caption. A few pages later,

in "Disaster looms" in the sports section, the backup goaltender for the Vancouver Canucks is Cory Schneider.

the negative and destabilizing affect

What effect does the affect/effect error by this writer (of "Our beavers are lethal!" in today's 24H Vancouver) have on her credibility?

issues that effect everyone; Interest seemed to peek on the rare occasion; The Jay Leno Show has pulled in 5.34 viewers

The NBC folks have made some errors in the past year, and maybe the writer of this article - "Leno avoids late-night snafu in act" in The Province on January 10, 2010 - is just trying to match them error for error. First is the word effect instead of affect. Then,

it's another homophonic error, featuring peek instead of peak.

Last but not least, no wonder The Jay Leno Show got pulled - the show has not only pulled in under six viewers a night (I had no idea I was in such select company), it's also been hacking up at least one viewer to create fractions.

a single mom who shoplifts to feed her hungry kids would be effected; assitance

Did the economy's downturn affect the quality of writing found in newspapers? This article - "People with warrants not eligible" - was in Vancouver 24 hours on October 20, 2009. Effected instead of affected wasn't the only error:

Assitance? There is no such word. I think the writer was trying for assistance. There should be a comma after assi(s)tance.

have an affect on your personality

-- Yahoo! Canada homepage on April 8, 2009

Do you see the word affects in the sentence at the bottom of the image? That is an example of correct usage. The word affect above it should be effect.

to aid merchants effected by Canada Line construction

-- "MLAs called to court" in Vancouver 24 hours on March 17 , 2009

The misspelling of effected affected me.

not the affects of a late night helping

-- "New hope springs forward" in Vancouver 24 hours on January 28, 2009

The word affect is a verb. The word effect is a noun. The writer should have used the plural form of the latter, not the former.

that effects their career; render your your life plan out of date

-- "Take charge to achieve balance" in Vancouver 24 hours on December 15, 2008

It affects their career and it can render your life plan out-of-date.
