The phrase to try and get away - seen here in "Shots fired in West Vancouver police chase" on CBC News online on April 20, 2010 - is wrong. It's the sort of thing you see/hear in casual writing/speech, but a major news company should know better. The correct way to write it, and say it, is to try to get away.
