Error in the graphic

24 hours Vancouverrors - April & May 2013

It's been a while since errors from the pages of 24 hours Vancouver have been featured here, and it's not because those pages have seen perfect writing; it's because I've been accumulating a whole bunch and now it's time to share them. First up, from "Predicting big things from emotional leader Kesler in the playoffs" on April 23, is the above mess. I think it can be solved by removing the is, but don't hold me to that. A couple of hyphens, in full-speed and power-move, would also help. Then,

in "Millennials + managers = meltdowns!" on May 6, gets contains an apostrophe and it absolutely should not contain an apostrophe. Then,

in the photo caption for "Pill bottles debut at advance polls" on May 9, prescription was misspelled. That was on page 4,

and on page 6, in the photo caption for "Riot couple avoids jail time" on May 9, sentenced was misspelled. Then,

in "Hader latest castmemeber to announce SNL departure" on May 15, there was a blatant misspelling in the headline. How was that missed?! Not only is castmemeber not a word, neither is castmember. It should be cast member. Then,

in "Modern thrives on relatability" on May 22, Cam is not Jay's son on Modern Family. Mitchell is Jay's son, and Cam is Mitchell's partner. Good effort there, writer. Then,

later in the same article, it was actually Cam who returned to teaching. Good effort again there, writer. Then,
 

on the same page as those Modern Family errors is this fun alternative spelling of "Gangnam Style" by Psy, which should also be in quotation marks instead of italicized. Click an image to enlarge it.

Yahoooooooooo! September 2012

It's Yahoo! time! Here are the errors I detected on the Yahoo! Canada homepage during September 2012. First, on September 12, there was an extra the. Then,

also on September 12, there was yet another Dragons' Den gaffe. If Yahoo! is talking about Dragons' Den, you can bet good money the apostrophe is in the wrong place. Then,

I clicked to the article ("Beardo, a hat for beards, more popular than creator imagined" on Yahoo! Canada Shine on September 11, 2012) and first saw that the caption for the large top-of-article photo has the same error. Then,

the article's fourth sentence has the same error. Then,

a few paragraphs later there shouldn't be an apostrophe at the end of Phillips. Much worse, though, is the misspelling of what should be Stroumboulopoulos. That's awful. Then,

one final repeated apostrophe error in what should be Dragons' Den. Then,

on the homepage on September 13 there was inconsistent capitalization. There is often one line of about ten that is in all caps. I don't get it. Then,

on September 14 the inconsistent capitalization happened again. Then,

on September 19 the writer should have scanned for for extra words. Also, it's either two accents or zero accents in resume. Not just one. Then,

on September 21 there were two apostrophe errors in one sentence. Hatem Jahshan and Tonia Jahshan are together known as the Jahshans. And I'm pretty sure you can tell by now that Dragon's Den is wrong. Then,

I clicked to the article ("Steeped Tea success marks Dragon’s Den return" on Yahoo! Canada Finance on September 20, 2012) and there's the incorrect Dragon's Den right there in the headline. C'mon Yahoo! - it's Dragons' Den. The show's den has more than one dragon. It's really not hard to confirm the correct apostrophe placement online. Then,

in the article's second sentence the writer decided to drop both the S and the apostrophe altogether to create Dragon Den. Yahoo!, you're making it worse. Maybe click the link that you provided readers and see for yourself how the show's title is written. Check the large logo at the top left of the page. Then,

still in the article, woman should be women. Then,

again in the same article, the semicolon should be an apostrophe. Then,

the S and the apostrophe reappear in the show's title, but the title is still wrong. Then,

in the final posting from the article (woo!), the Jahshans shouldn't have an apostrophe and Arlene's last name is Dickinson. Then,

back to the homepage (woo!), also on September 21 readers were gifted an its/it's error. Then,

on September 23 there was a misspelling of revisit. Then,

on September 29 the word a should have been added in front of 30-year-old. Then,

on September 30 decieved should have been deceived. I followed a hunch that Ban Ki-Moon's name was wrong, looked it up, and his name is actually Ban Ki-moon. We're done! Click an image to enlarge it.

Error in the title

The show is Sex and the City. From "Surviving the ups and downs of a yo-yo relationship" in 24 hours Vancouver on March 20, 2012.

The editor's day off

There are several issues with this paragraph from "Langley runaway issues Facebook apology" on CBC News online on June 20, 2011. I watched the YouTube video apology, and in the part that the writer is quoting from Mandy McPhee actually said, "Life moves pretty fast" - in fact, that was also the title of the video, which has now been removed from YouTube. Also, there should be an apostrophe in it's and another R in referring. The worst error, however, is the butchering of Ferris Bueller's Day Off. Where's the apostrophe? Why aren't day and off capitalized? Awful. The movie's title has been fixed, but the other errors remain. Click the image to enlarge it.

Update: Oops! I overlooked another brutal error. The headline refers to a Facebook apology, but the apology was a video on YouTube and there is actually nothing at all in the article about Facebook. Go ahead and explain that, CBC.

Yahoooo! (and MSN)

More errors from the Yahoo! Canada homepage. First up, I saw this misspelling of fluoride on February 9, 2011. Later that same day,

it's an popular fairy tale. Really? Popular doesn't even come close to starting with a vowel sound. Change an to a, please. Next,

on February 10, 2011, I see another incorrect way of writing Dragons' Den. At the same time,

it's identically incorrect on the MSN Canada homepage. So, 24 hours, Yahoo!, and MSN all can't get the show's title correct. Finally,

the Yahoo! Canada homepage today lost an M in the spelling of filmmaker. Click an image to enlarge it.

Playing a young writers

There are two errors in this one sentence from "Hollywood's newest Olsen makes film debut with 2 movies at Sundance" on Yahoo! Canada News on January 23, 2011. The first error: the movie is actually Martha Marcy May Marlene. The second error: women should be woman. Click the image to enlarge it.

Sex in the City; sunglases

It's been a while since we've detected an error in a Virgin Radio radio in 24H Vancouver. Mainly because their advertisements are rare. But today they had an ad covering the entire front cover and the inside front cover. The show - and movie - is Sex and the City, and a fourth S is required for the proper spelling of sunglasses.

'Whitecastle' star opens up

First it was Lettermen opening up. Today it's a 'Whitecastle' star opening up on Yahoo! Canada's homepage. The movie Yahoo! is referring to is 'Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle' and so their homepage should read 'White Castle' star.

Kate Stevens; All My Living

First of all, it's Katie, not Kate. Second of all, what's up with the two types of apostrophes following Katie's last name, with no space before version? Third of all, and for this one the writer - of "The girls go fake on America's Next Top Model" in today's 24H Vancouver - needs to go sit in the corner, the song is All My Loving. Go. Corner. Sit. Now.

The Tonight Show with Jay Leno

No. "Television" in yesterday's 24H Vancouver had it wrong. Those guests were on Late Show with David Letterman.

Dancing with Wolves;The Inn at the Forks' offers

Either there was a sequel to Dances with Wolves or the writer of this article - "Indigenous spa offers a unique experience" in 24H Vancouver on March 23, 2010 - went with her memory instead of verifying the title of Kevin Costner's movie. Also,

the apostrophe after Forks needs to be removed.

"Paranornal Activity"

It looks like something paranormal is affecting Yahoo! Canada's homepage today, as the misspelled "Paranornal Activity" is featured twice.

Simon (Cowell) was like, Do Stop Crying Your Heart Out.

The Oasis song is called Stop Crying Your Heart Out, so Do should not be italicized nor capitalized.

Dance With The Stars

The show's title is Dancing With The Stars and there is clearly room for the two extra letters (as proven by the text below the title), so why the shortened and incorrect title, 24 hours?

The Time Travelers' Wife

-- "Eric Bana's clean sex" on Yahoo! Canada Lifestyle on August 13, 2009

The book was awesome and I'm hoping the movie -which hits theatres here tomorrow - does it justice. However, it's not a book about the shared wife of two or more time travelers, as The Time Travelers' Wife suggests. There is just one time traveler and the correct title is The Time Traveler's Wife. Now if you'll excuse me, I need to do some sweeping.

Winona Ryder's 'Heather's' makeover

a follow up to the his 2003 release The Natashas: Inside the Global Sex Trade; Malerak; easier said then done

Aren't writers encouraged to proofread their own work before publishing? Aren't they (also) encouraged to get someone they trust to proofread their work before publishing? Don't newspapers - all newspapers - have editors? In the first image, there is an extra word; his was probably meant to replace the, but both are present. Amazon.ca tells me that there are two books by Malarek with similar titles: The Natashas: The New Global Sex Trade, and The Natashas: Inside the New Global Sex Trade. The title of his earlier work that is given in the article is not found on Amazon.

Second image: the first five times Victor's last name is written in the article, it's Malarek. The sixth time, it's Malerak. The seventh and eighth times, it's Malarek. The ninth and tenth times, it's Malerak. The good news is that the writer was correct 70% of the time. The bad news is that the writer was incorrect 30% of the time. Third image: seeing then when it should be than (but never vice versa) is becoming a frequent occurrence. I find it easy to use the correct word, as then and than do not have similar meanings.
