Cage match

Wait, wait, wait. Are you telling me that Season of the Witch's cast includes famous actor Nicolas Cage and an actor I've never heard of by the name of Nicholas Cage?! That's crazy! From 24H Weekend table of contents in 24 hours Vancouver on January 7, 2011.

An attempt at headline:of the-decade

That is a very goofy headline. It's from 24 hours Vancouver on January 6, 2011, and I'm pretty sure fixing it would mean having a simple space between high-speed and Internet and having the colon replace the hyphen between Internet and poll (with a space between the colon and poll, of course). The article also features the following paragraph,

which has a grossly misspelled their between on and lives.

Where's the the second comma?

The writer of "Canadians collapse in final" in 24 hours Vancouver on January 6, 2011, should have put a comma after first-rounder. Also, there should be just one the between was and Saskatoon.

Someone needs to make writing resolutions

The writer of "Dating resolutions" in today's 24 hours Vancouver is in dire need of a dictionary.

Don't delay, apply toda- oh, too late

I am pretty sure that this Sun News job posting - for a Mobile Journalist, or MoJo, from today's 24 hours Vancouver - wasn't in their previous edition. Yet the deadline for aplying has already passed. Also, there should be a comma after Friday and a comma after 31st. One page later,

there's another Sun News job posting, this one for ENG/Editor/Satellite Truck Operator. Same three problems as above.

He really does hate thesbians

Once upon a time, a friend of mine spotted an error on the Douglas College homepage. He used computer magic to collect a screen capture, used more computer magic to create a red oval around the error, and then used computer magic once more to send me his masterpiece along with this comment:
Check out what these "THESBIANS" did for the college. I don't hate actors or gay women, but gay female actors? HATE. ;)
Here's a link to the news article. I like that there is a picture there of four women and that one of them is Meg Stainsby, Interim Dean of Language, Literature & Performing Arts. My friend sent me the error on December 29, 2010, and the error is still there today. Click the image to enlarge it.

This error is priceless

A friend of mine sent this to me with the comment, "Does this make sense?" No. No, it doesn't. Pricess is not a word - it should be Princess, as it is in the smaller print - yet Toys "R" Us displayed this sign loud and proud on December 18, 2010.

Why not "seeing" too?

I think that he was upset about having to waiting 45 minutes to seeing a doctor has a nice ring to it. As it is, waiting should be wait. It's been three days since the article's last update and this first-sentence error remains in "Man rams Chevy into hospital doors" on CBC News online on December 29, 2010.

Crap headline

If you read the headline "Suspected cougar sighting in South Surrey" (as I did on CBC News online on December 28, 2010), wouldn't you expect to read about an animal being spotted that might or might not be a cougar? I did - as in, that's what I expected - yet that's not what I read. Here's the article in full (the bolding is by me, and also note where all the sign point should be all the signs point):

Conservation officers have been called in to investigate the discovery of a deer carcass in South Surrey, B.C., that at least one resident is blaming on a cougar attack.

Resident Margaret Corrigan says the deer was found near her home at 192 Street and 3A Avenue, southeast of Vancouver, and even though she hasn't actually seen the big cat, all the sign point to a cougar attack.

"He had just ripped off the front leg. I think the cougar jumped him from the top and pierced his neck and brought him down that way," said Corrigan, who spotted other signs in the area.

"They go to the nearest tree and they scratch the bark on the tree and then they spray and that sort of claims the area as theirs. And right beside the kill was a tree that was scratched — very freshly scratched — so that we could tell that it was a cougar," she said.

Corrigan says people in the rural neighbourhood are concerned about all the small children and pets.

Errors for any occasion

Oops - I meant occassion. No, wait, I'm right and the apparently professional writer is wrong: occasion contains just one S. That's not the only error from "The perfect presents for the lady of the house" in 24 hours Vancouver on December 15, 2010. Next up,

a typo, or possibly a misspelling in the description for artisan eyewear. Okay, so maybe the writer can't proofread like she used to, but then shouldn't someone else step in? Finally,

more artisan eyewear. But the description and image don't quite match the heading.

Starting with one, ending with another

That there is a mighty fine em-dash (after penalty). It's a shame, though, that a second em-dash wasn't paired up with it. Instead, a comma took its place (after Marouelli). From "Video: Team Canada's Kassian ejected for head shot" on Yahoo! Canada Sports on December 28, 2010.
